Fresha Highly Recommended 2026

Anxiety has a way of making everything feel heavier than it should. The mornings that start with dread before you've even opened your eyes. The conversations that replay on loop for hours. The physical signs you might not even connect to anxiety: the clenched jaw, the shallow breathing, the shoulders that never fully drop.

It's exhausting. And it can feel isolating even when the people around you are trying their best.

At our clinic on Acklam Road in Middlesbrough, we work with many people from across Teesside who come to us looking for support that works with their body, not around it. The results speak for themselves.

Anxiety Is a Full-Body Experience

Anxiety isn't just a mental experience; it's a physical one too. When the nervous system stays in a state of high alert, the effects ripple through the whole body. Sleep fragments. Digestion suffers. Muscles brace. Concentration scatters. The body is running a programme it can't switch off.

This is where acupuncture has something genuinely useful to offer. Rather than addressing anxiety as purely a cognitive problem, acupuncture works directly with the nervous system, helping it find its way back to a calmer, more regulated state.

What the Evidence Says

We want to be honest with you. The British Acupuncture Council, whose 2025 evidence review informs this page, is clear that the evidence base needs further strengthening before definitive claims can be made. We won't oversell this. What the research does show, consistently, is meaningful and growing.

15.53 Average anxiety score on entry to NHS ear acupuncture programme β€” severe anxiety

8.09 Average score at course completion β€” mild anxiety. 100% of patients recommended the service.

2021 Systematic Review β€” 1,823 Patients with Confirmed GAD

One of the most robust reviews to date examined 20 randomised clinical trials involving 1,823 participants, all specifically diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder. Acupuncture produced a statistically significant reduction in anxiety symptoms across all comparisons. When researchers isolated only the trials comparing acupuncture directly against Western medication, acupuncture still came out ahead.

2023 Systematic Review β€” 37 Randomised Controlled Trials

One of the most comprehensive reviews to date analysed 37 RCTs and found significant reductions in both clinician-rated anxiety (Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale) and self-reported anxiety scores, at moderate quality of evidence.

Hong et al. Effectiveness of electroacupuncture on anxiety. Frontiers in Psychology, 2023.

The Acupuncture Evidence Project (2017)

This comprehensive review of evidence across over 100 conditions rated acupuncture as moderately effective for anxiety based on high-level evidence. A 2016 systematic analysis of 400+ randomised patients found that effects were significant compared to conventional treatments. The largest individual trial found acupuncture produced more than twice the symptom reduction compared to medication and psychotherapy combined.

McDonald J, Janz S. The Acupuncture Evidence Project. Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association Ltd. 2017.

The BAcC 2025 summary notes a key advantage of acupuncture that medication cannot match: it can address multiple symptoms simultaneously, including anxiety, sleep, pain, and digestion, without the compounding side-effect risks that come with multiple prescriptions.

1,823 Participants in the 2021 GAD-specific systematic review, all with confirmed generalised anxiety
37 Randomised controlled trials in the 2023 electroacupuncture review
~50% Of patients treated pharmacologically for anxiety experience an inadequate response

Anxiety Wears Many Faces

At our Middlesbrough clinic, we support people experiencing a wide range of presentations, including those who aren't sure if what they have "counts" as anxiety:

  • Generalised anxiety: persistent worry that's hard to switch off
  • Panic attacks and acute episodes of overwhelm
  • Stress and burnout from sustained pressure at work or home
  • Anxiety linked to hormonal changes: perimenopause, PMS, postpartum
  • Sleep difficulties driven by an overactive mind
  • Physical tension in the jaw, neck, shoulders, or chest
  • Digestive symptoms tied to chronic stress: IBS, nausea, appetite changes
  • Low mood alongside anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress and nervous system dysregulation

If you're not sure whether your experience fits, please just get in touch. These conversations are always welcome.

The Evidence for Ear Acupuncture and Anxiety

A review of 15 studies involving 1,603 patients found auricular acupuncture reduced anxiety with effect sizes comparable to benzodiazepine medication, without the dependency risks or side effects.

A separate review of 13 studies found ear acupuncture significantly reduced anxiety compared to both placebo and waitlist controls.

How Acupuncture Calms the Anxious Nervous System

The mechanisms are increasingly well understood. According to the British Acupuncture Council's 2025 evidence review, acupuncture may benefit anxiety by:

  • Acting on the brain's stress centres: reducing activity in the areas responsible for worry and rumination, while promoting relaxation
  • Regulating key neurotransmitters including serotonin, noradrenaline, dopamine, and GABA: the same systems targeted by anxiety medications, accessed through the body's own pathways
  • Modulating the HPA axis: reducing cortisol production via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system, which governs the body's stress response
  • Improving Heart Rate Variability (HRV): one of the most reliable physiological measures of stress resilience; acupuncture consistently improves HRV over a course of treatment
  • Activating the parasympathetic nervous system: shifting the body from fight-or-flight toward rest-and-digest, the state it needs to recover and regulate

What Happens When You Come to See Us

We know that for someone with anxiety, the unknown can feel like its own barrier. Here is exactly what to expect, step by step.

1

You book online β€” any time, no phone call needed

Use our Fresha booking page to choose a date and time that suits you. You'll receive an immediate confirmation. No waiting, no gatekeeping.

2

A short intake form arrives beforehand

We'll ask a few brief questions before your appointment: what brings you in, any relevant health details. For NADA auricular acupuncture, this is kept short and straightforward. For traditional body acupuncture with Deanna, we'll explore your health picture in more depth at your appointment.

3

Your appointment β€” tailored to your treatment type

NADA auricular acupuncture with Anthony: a 45-minute session. A brief check-in, then five gentle needles placed in the outer ear while you relax seated and fully clothed. No need to go into depth about your history; the treatment does the work.

Traditional acupuncture with Deanna: your initial consultation is 75–90 minutes. We begin with a thorough case history covering sleep, digestion, stress patterns, hormonal picture, and what life looks like right now. This depth is what allows treatment to be genuinely tailored to you. Your first treatment follows in the same appointment.

4

You leave β€” and most people notice something

Many clients describe leaving their first session feeling noticeably quieter and calmer, sometimes profoundly so. We'd suggest leaving a little time before driving if possible.

5

We build from there β€” at your pace

Acupuncture is dose-dependent, meaning results accumulate over a course of treatment rather than arriving all at once from a single session. We'll recommend a course based on what we find, and we'll always be honest with you about what we're observing. There's no pressure to continue beyond what feels right.

What clients across Teesside commonly notice over time:

  • A calmer baseline, less quick to tip into overwhelm or reactivity
  • Better sleep quality and easier mornings
  • Physical tension releasing in the jaw, neck, chest, and shoulders
  • Greater emotional steadiness and resilience
  • Digestive symptoms settling as the nervous system calms
  • A sense of being more present and less caught in anxious thought patterns

Acupuncture Alongside Other Treatments

Whether you're just beginning to explore options, on a waiting list for talking therapy, already taking medication, or somewhere in between, acupuncture can play a useful role at almost any point.

For those who haven't yet sought help: acupuncture is a safe, self-referred starting point. No GP referral needed, no waiting list.

For those already in treatment: acupuncture works well alongside medication, CBT, and counselling, addressing the physical, somatic experience of anxiety in ways that talking therapies cannot.

For those where current treatment isn't working well enough: research suggests around half of people treated with medication for anxiety experience an inadequate response. Acupuncture offers a genuinely different pathway, one that works through the body rather than around it.

We always encourage you to continue existing care and keep your GP informed. We're adding to your support, not replacing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

Acupuncture is dose-dependent, meaning results build cumulatively over a course of treatment rather than arriving from a single session. This isn't a limitation; it's how the therapy works, in the same way that exercise produces results over weeks rather than after one visit to the gym. As a starting point we'd typically recommend four to six sessions and then review. Many clients notice meaningful shifts within that window, some more quickly. There's no pressure to continue beyond what feels right for you.

Can I have acupuncture alongside medication or talking therapies?

Yes, many of our clients do. Acupuncture works well alongside GP-prescribed medication and talking therapies like CBT or counselling. We always encourage you to continue existing care and keep your GP informed.

What is the NADA protocol and is it suitable for me?

The NADA protocol is a five-point ear acupuncture treatment developed specifically for stress, anxiety, trauma, and nervous system regulation. It's gentle, non-invasive, and received while seated and fully clothed, which makes it particularly accessible for people who are new to acupuncture, or whose anxiety heightens physical sensitivity. Anthony can advise whether this is a good fit during your first appointment.

What if I'm anxious about having acupuncture?

You wouldn't be the first, and we take this seriously. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, far thinner than injection needles, and most people find the sensation much gentler than they expected. We always work at your pace. If you'd like to talk to us before booking, please do reach out. There's genuinely no obligation.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly through our Fresha page without any referral. Many clients come to us while on NHS waiting lists for other support, or before approaching their GP at all. You're welcome at any stage.

You Don't Have to Keep Managing This Alone

If anxiety has been affecting your daily life and you're curious whether acupuncture might help, we'd love to hear from you. No commitment, no pressure. Just a first step, in your own time.
