Ear Seeds: What They Are, How They Work, and Where to Get Them in Middlesbrough

If you've spotted tiny gold or silver dots on someone's ear and wondered what they were, you've probably seen ear seeds in action.

Ear seeds are small pellets placed on specific points of the outer ear to stimulate the body's natural healing response. They're painless, discreet, and you can wear them for days at a time. People use them for everything from stress and anxiety to sleep problems, pain, and even support during IVF.

At my clinic in Middlesbrough, ear seeds are one of the treatments I get asked about most. Partly because they look intriguing. Partly because people want something they can use between sessions. And partly because, once you understand how auricular acupuncture works, they make a lot of sense.

This post covers everything you need to know: what ear seeds are, what the evidence actually says, and what to expect if you'd like to try them.

Key Takeaways

  • Ear seeds are a needle-free form of auricular acupuncture, applied to specific pressure points on the outer ear
  • They can be worn for three to five days and are a gentle way to extend the benefits of a treatment session
  • Research suggests they may help with anxiety, sleep, and pain, particularly when used alongside regular acupuncture
  • They are generally safe for most people, including during pregnancy, though it's worth checking with a practitioner first
  • Ear seeds are available at our clinic in Middlesbrough, applied by our practitioners and tailored to your needs

What Are Ear Seeds, Exactly?

Ear seeds are tiny pellets (traditionally made from the seeds of the Vaccaria plant, though metal or ceramic versions are also widely used) that are secured to the outer ear with a small piece of adhesive tape.

They sit on specific acupuncture points on the ear, which in auricular therapy are believed to correspond to different areas of the body. The seed doesn't pierce the skin. It simply rests against the point, and when you press on it gently, it stimulates that area in a similar way to an acupuncture needle.

Traditional Vaccaria ear seeds and gold metal pellets, both available at our Middlesbrough clinic

The practice comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine, where the ear has long been understood as a map of the whole body. The same principle underpins auricular acupuncture at our Middlesbrough clinic, working through the ear to influence what's happening elsewhere.

Where Did Ear Seeds Come From?

Auricular therapy has roots in ancient Chinese medicine, but it was a French physician named Paul Nogier who developed the modern auricular map in the 1950s. His work formed the basis of how practitioners use ear points today, and it's now recognised by the World Health Organisation as a legitimate system of treatment.

Traditional ear seeds use Vaccaria seeds: small, round seeds that have just the right amount of firmness to apply steady pressure without causing discomfort. More recently, gold and silver metal pellets have become popular, and some people find these more comfortable to wear over several days.

Which Ear Seeds Are Right for Me?

Not all ear seeds are the same, and the type you use can make a difference to comfort and effectiveness.

🌱

Vaccaria Seeds

The traditional option. Small, round, natural plant seeds with a firm surface that applies steady pressure. Gentle and well-tolerated by most skin types. A good starting point for first-timers.

Gold Pellets

Thought in TCM to have a tonifying, warming effect. Often recommended for conditions involving fatigue, deficiency, or those who feel the cold easily. Many patients also simply find them more comfortable to wear.

🌿

Silver Pellets

Considered to have a more cooling, sedating quality in TCM. Often used where there is excess heat, inflammation, or heightened anxiety. A good choice if you tend to run warm or feel overstimulated.

💜

What We Use at the Clinic

At our Middlesbrough clinic we use both Vaccaria seeds and gold and silver pellets, selected based on your constitution and what you're being treated for. Your practitioner will advise which is most appropriate at your appointment.

If you've bought a home kit online and aren't sure which type to use, book an ear acupuncture appointment in Middlesbrough first. Getting the right points and the right seed type from the start makes a real difference to your results.

How Do Ear Seeds Work?

Auricular acupuncture map showing ear pressure points

The auricular map: the ear contains over 200 acupuncture points, each corresponding to a specific area of the body

The ear contains over 200 acupuncture points. Each point is thought to connect to a specific organ, system, or area of the body. When a seed is placed on a point and pressed gently, it sends a mild stimulating signal along that pathway.

In Western terms, research suggests that auricular stimulation influences the vagus nerve, specifically the auricular branch of the vagus nerve, which is accessible on the surface of the outer ear. The vagus nerve plays a central role in regulating the nervous system, stress response, inflammation, and pain perception. Stimulating it through the ear creates a measurable effect on the body's overall state.

This is why people often report feeling calmer, sleeping better, or experiencing reduced pain after auricular treatment. There are real physiological pathways being activated.

A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia, covering 15 randomised controlled trials involving 1,603 patients. It found that auricular stimulation significantly reduced anxiety scores compared to sham control. Notably, there was no significant difference in effect between auricular stimulation and benzodiazepines for preoperative anxiety. No serious adverse effects were reported across any of the trials.

What Can Ear Seeds Help With?

The most common reasons people come to our Middlesbrough clinic asking about ear seeds are:

🧘

Stress & Anxiety

The Shen Men point, sometimes called the "spirit gate", is one of the most widely used ear points for anxiety and emotional regulation. Multiple clinical trials support its use.

🌙

Sleep Difficulties

Poor sleep is closely tied to a dysregulated nervous system. Ear seeds address this directly. Many patients from across Teesside use them specifically to support sleep between clinic sessions.

💜

Pain Management

The NADA protocol, a specific five-point auricular treatment, has been used for pain, trauma, and addiction recovery for decades. Ear seeds can extend this support between clinical sessions.

🌸

Fertility & Pregnancy Support

As part of a wider programme of acupuncture support, ear seeds can be a useful tool for relaxation and stress regulation during the two-week wait or through an IVF cycle. Research also supports auriculotherapy for pain management during labour.

What Our Patients Say

  • "I wore my ear seeds throughout my IVF transfer week. I pressed them every time I felt myself spiralling with worry. I honestly don't know how I'd have got through it without them." — Patient, Middlesbrough
  • "I'd tried everything for sleep. The seeds felt like nothing at first but after three nights I was sleeping through for the first time in months. I've had them applied at every session since." — Patient, Yarm

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, covering 16 studies with 1,199 participants, found that auricular acupressure significantly reduced Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores compared to control groups. The review found that improvement in sleep quality was greatest when Vaccaria seeds were used as the application method.

Xin et al., 2024. Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice. doi.org/10.1016/j.ctcp.2024.101876

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Medicine, covering 15 randomised controlled trials involving 1,125 participants, confirmed that auricular acupressure significantly improves sleep quality and sleep efficiency. The Shen Men, Heart, and Subcortex points were identified as the three most commonly used points, accounting for over 70% of point selection across all included trials.

Huang et al., 2025. Medicine. doi.org/10.1097/MD.0000000000041498

A network meta-analysis published in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica reviewed 53 randomised controlled trials covering 6,832 participants. Among non-pharmacological interventions for insomnia in older adults, auricular acupuncture performed better than control interventions, placing it alongside mindfulness-based programmes as a credible sleep support option.

Samara et al., 2020. Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica. doi.org/10.1111/acps.13201

A note on pregnancy: ear seeds are generally considered safe during pregnancy, but certain auricular points are contraindicated. If you're pregnant and based in Middlesbrough, Stockton, Yarm, or the surrounding Teesside area, please book with a qualified practitioner rather than using a home kit. We can select appropriate points safely.

A 2024 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies, covering 5 randomised controlled trials involving 451 patients, found that auriculotherapy produced a significant reduction in labour pain intensity compared to no treatment. This adds to the growing body of evidence supporting auricular acupuncture as a safe, non-pharmacological option during pregnancy and labour.

Do Ear Seeds Actually Work?

This is the question I get asked most, and I want to give you a straight answer.

The research is genuinely promising, particularly for anxiety, sleep, and pain. But the evidence base is still developing, and results vary between individuals. What I can tell you is that in clinical practice, patients respond well to them.

They work best for people who:

  • Find it difficult to commit to frequent acupuncture sessions
  • Want something to use between appointments
  • Are sensitive to needles and want a gentler starting point
  • Are dealing with ongoing stress or poor sleep and want additional support

They are not a replacement for treatment. But as part of a wider approach to wellbeing, they're a tool I use regularly with patients and one I'm glad to be able to offer.

Anthony, FHT-registered auricular acupuncture and sports massage practitioner at Deanna Thomas – Acupuncture & Wellbeing, Middlesbrough

About Anthony

Anthony is our FHT-registered practitioner specialising in auricular acupuncture, battlefield acupuncture, and sports massage. He carries out all ear acupuncture and NADA treatments at the clinic, bringing a calm, thorough approach that puts patients at ease, particularly those who are nervous about needles or trying auricular therapy for the first time.

How Long Do Ear Seeds Stay On?

Most ear seeds stay in place for three to five days. You can press on them gently throughout the day, particularly when you're feeling stressed, in pain, or struggling to sleep, to activate the point. After five days, they should be removed even if still adhering well, to give the skin time to rest.

If a seed falls off before then, that's completely normal. The adhesive can loosen with showering, swimming, or exercise.

Why Do My Ear Seeds Hurt?

A mild ache or tenderness when you press on a seed is normal and is generally considered a sign that the point is active. It usually settles quickly.

If the area around a seed becomes sore, red, or irritated, remove it and allow the skin to rest. This can happen if the seed is left on too long, if the skin is particularly sensitive, or if the adhesive causes a reaction. Your practitioner will advise on how to care for them at home after each application.

Can You Apply Ear Seeds at Home?

Pre-packaged ear seed kits are available online, and some people do use them at home. If you have a good understanding of the auricular points relevant to your situation, this can work as a supplement to your treatment.

That said, I'd always recommend having your first application done by a qualified practitioner. The points matter. Placing seeds in the wrong area won't give you the results you're looking for, and certain points should be avoided during pregnancy or with specific health conditions.

If you'd like to learn which points are most relevant for you, that's something we cover during ear acupuncture appointments at our Middlesbrough clinic.

When Ear Seeds Are Not Enough on Their Own

Ear seeds are genuinely useful. But there are situations where they're a supporting tool rather than the main event, and being clear about this matters.

If you've been using a home kit for a few weeks and haven't noticed much difference, there are usually two reasons. Either the points being stimulated aren't the most relevant ones for your specific situation, or what you're dealing with needs more than surface-level support to shift.

A full auricular acupuncture session is a different experience entirely. During a session, your practitioner takes a detailed case history, selects points based on your specific pattern of symptoms, uses needles to create a deeper and more precise stimulation of those points, and then applies ear seeds to extend the effect between appointments. The seeds you leave with are calibrated to you, not to a generic kit.

For more complex presentations involving chronic pain, long-standing anxiety, fertility support, or addiction recovery, we also offer NADA auricular acupuncture as a standalone treatment. NADA uses a specific five-point protocol that has been used in clinical settings worldwide for decades. You can book a NADA session here if you'd like to find out more.

Ear seeds work best as part of a relationship with a practitioner who knows your history. They're an extension of a treatment plan, not a replacement for one.

Deanna Thomas Acupuncture and Wellbeing clinic at The House, Acklam Road, Middlesbrough

Our Middlesbrough Clinic

Ear acupuncture appointments start from £45. Ear seeds are applied by Anthony, our auricular acupuncture practitioner, as part of your session. We're based at The House, 283 Acklam Road, Middlesbrough, TS5 7BP, serving patients from across Teesside, Stockton, Yarm, Ingleby Barwick, and Darlington.

What Makes Our Clinic Different: Ear Seeds as Part of Your Treatment

One thing that sets us apart from many acupuncture clinics is that we incorporate ear seeds directly into your treatments. Rather than offering them as a separate add-on, they're woven into the session itself, applied by your practitioner to support and extend the work being done with acupuncture.

This means you leave the clinic with the seeds already in place, already activated, and already working. You're not starting from scratch at home. You're continuing something that began on the treatment table.

What to Expect at Your Ear Acupuncture Appointment

If you've never had auricular acupuncture before, knowing what to expect makes a real difference to how you feel walking through the door.

Your first appointment begins with a short consultation. Anthony will ask about what brought you in, how you're sleeping, your stress levels, any pain or health conditions, and what you're hoping to get from the treatment. This shapes exactly which points he selects and whether Vaccaria seeds, gold pellets, or silver pellets are most appropriate for you.

You'll then sit comfortably while Anthony cleanses the outer ear and applies the seeds. Each seed is placed with precision on its specific point and secured with a small adhesive backing. The process is gentle and takes around ten to fifteen minutes. Most people find it deeply relaxing.

Before you leave, Anthony will show you exactly where each seed is, what it's targeting, and how to press and activate it at home. You'll leave feeling clear on what to do and why.

Appointments start from £45. Book your first ear acupuncture appointment here.

How to Use Your Ear Seeds at Home

Using your ear seeds well is simple, but doing it mindfully makes a real difference. Here's how we teach our patients to get the most from them:

  • Press gently for a few seconds. Find the seed with your fingertip and apply light, steady pressure for three to five seconds. You should feel a mild ache or warmth at the point. That's normal and means it's working.
  • Pair it with an intention. Before you press, hold a clear, simple intention in your mind. "I am calm" or "I am resting" is enough. The intention anchors the moment and helps the nervous system respond.
  • Breathe with it. As you press, take one slow, mindful inhale through the nose, then a long, steady exhale through the mouth. This combination of pressure, intention, and breath activates the parasympathetic nervous system far more effectively than pressing alone.
  • Repeat two to three times a day, or whenever you notice stress, pain, or disrupted sleep creeping in. Consistency matters more than frequency.

This is a practice, not just a product. The more intentionally you use your seeds, the more you'll get from them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ear seeds safe for pregnancy?

Generally yes, but with an important caveat. Certain auricular points are contraindicated in pregnancy, so home application using a generic kit isn't advisable. If you're pregnant and interested in ear seeds, book with a qualified practitioner who can select appropriate points safely.

How quickly do ear seeds work?

Some people notice an effect within hours, particularly for anxiety or sleep. For ongoing conditions, results tend to build over regular use. They work best alongside a course of acupuncture treatment rather than as a one-off.

Can I shower or exercise with ear seeds in?

Yes. They're water-resistant but the adhesive can loosen with repeated wetting, so take care when washing your hair and avoid rubbing the area with a towel.

Where can I get ear seeds done in Middlesbrough?

At Deanna Thomas – Acupuncture & Wellbeing at The House, 283 Acklam Road, Middlesbrough, TS5 7BP. Ear acupuncture appointments start from £45 and ear seeds are applied as part of the session. Book your appointment here.

Can I use ear seeds for anxiety alongside medication?

Yes. Ear seeds are non-invasive and don't interact with medication. Always let your practitioner know what you're taking so your treatment can be tailored appropriately.

"Wellness grows where energy flows."

Final Thoughts

Ear seeds are a small thing that can make a quietly meaningful difference, particularly for people managing stress, poor sleep, or ongoing discomfort who want support between sessions.

They're not a replacement for treatment, and I'll never promise otherwise. But as part of a wider approach to wellbeing, they're a tool I use regularly with patients here in Middlesbrough and one I'm genuinely glad to offer.
