NADA Acupuncture: What It Is, How It Works, and Who It Can Help

NADA Protocol · Auricular Acupuncture · Middlesbrough Clinic

If you've never heard of NADA acupuncture, you're not alone. It's one of those treatments that tends to find people at exactly the right moment, when they're carrying something that feels too heavy to keep managing on their own.

NADA stands for the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. It's a specific five-point protocol using fine needles on the outer ear, and it was developed in the 1970s for people going through addiction recovery. Over the following decades it spread into psychiatric services, trauma relief programmes, prisons, disaster zones, cancer survivorship clinics, and community health settings in more than 40 countries.

At our clinic in Middlesbrough, NADA is offered by Anthony, our certified NADA GB practitioner. This post covers what the protocol is, what the research actually shows, and how to decide whether it might be useful for you.

If you're already familiar with NADA and simply want to book, you can book a NADA session here or find out more on our NADA treatment page.

Key Takeaways

  • NADA is a standardised five-point auricular protocol used for stress, anxiety, addiction recovery, PTSD, and menopausal symptoms
  • It was developed in the 1970s at Lincoln Hospital in New York and is now used in over 40 countries
  • Research shows consistent reductions in anxiety, cravings, stress, and sleep problems when used alongside other therapies
  • Evidence is strongest as an adjunct to treatment. NADA works best as part of a wider support plan, not as a standalone cure
  • Both Deanna and Anthony are certified NADA GB practitioners, recertifying annually. Anthony is FHT-registered, fully insured, and licensed to practice by Middlesbrough Council
  • Sessions available in Middlesbrough from £45, private or with a companion

What Is NADA Acupuncture?

NADA acupuncture uses five specific points on the outer ear, all needled bilaterally (both ears) while the person sits quietly in a chair for 30 to 45 minutes. There's no need to remove clothing, lie down, or engage in conversation. Many people find it deeply meditative.

Unlike a traditional acupuncture consultation, which involves a full case history, tongue and pulse diagnosis, and a personalised point selection, the NADA protocol is the same five points for everyone. This is partly what makes it so versatile. It doesn't require complex diagnosis to deliver. It works at the level of the nervous system, addressing the underlying stress response rather than targeting a specific condition.

It's part of the broader world of auricular acupuncture, which maps the entire body onto the outer ear and uses needle or pressure stimulation to create effects elsewhere in the body.

Where Did NADA Come From?

The protocol was developed in the mid-1970s at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx, New York, initially as a tool for opiate withdrawal and addiction recovery. The team there, led by Dr Michael Smith, found that auricular acupuncture helped people manage withdrawal symptoms, reduced cravings, and made it easier for patients to engage with counselling and other therapies alongside their treatment.

From those beginnings in one hospital in New York, the NADA protocol spread globally. It has been used in disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina, in conflict zones, in NHS mental health services, in addiction units, in prisons, and in cancer survivorship programmes. The fact that it requires no verbal engagement, no undressing, and relatively little equipment makes it remarkably portable. It can be delivered to groups of people simultaneously, even in challenging environments.

Today, NADA GB is the UK governing body for NADA practitioners, and both Deanna and Anthony hold current NADA GB certification, renewed annually.

The Five NADA Points Explained

Each of the five points on the outer ear is thought to correspond to a different aspect of stress, emotion, or physiological function. Together they create a calming, regulating effect on the nervous system as a whole.

The five NADA acupuncture points on the outer ear: Shen Men, Sympathetic, Kidney, Liver, Lung

The five NADA points: Shen Men, Sympathetic, Kidney, Liver, and Lung, all on the outer ear

1

Shen Men

Often called the "spirit gate." Reduces anxiety, promotes calm, and is one of the most widely researched auricular points for emotional regulation.

2

Sympathetic

Works on the autonomic nervous system to reduce the stress response and shift the body from fight-or-flight into a calmer, more regulated state.

3

Kidney

Traditionally associated with deep-seated fear and anxiety. Supports the adrenal system, which is often depleted in people experiencing chronic stress.

4

Liver

Associated with detoxification and the processing of emotion, particularly anger, frustration, and unresolved stress. Often particularly active in people with addiction histories.

5

Lung

Linked to relaxation, grief, and the letting go of things that are no longer serving you. In TCM the Lung governs both breath and the ability to release, which is why so many people find this point quietly emotional.

What Is NADA Acupuncture Used For?

NADA's clinical reach has expanded considerably since its origins in addiction treatment. At our Middlesbrough clinic, we see people coming for NADA with a wide range of needs.

🧠

Stress & Anxiety

The most common reason people come for NADA at our clinic. The protocol consistently reduces anxiety scores across multiple clinical settings, from hospital wards to community wellbeing services.

🌙

Sleep Difficulties

People undergoing NADA regularly report improved sleep quality. The calming effect on the nervous system makes it particularly useful for people whose sleep is disrupted by stress, anxiety, or intrusive thoughts.

🔄

Addiction & Recovery

Where NADA began. Used alongside counselling and medication, it reduces cravings, eases withdrawal symptoms, and supports engagement with the wider recovery process. Not a standalone treatment for addiction, but a meaningful adjunct.

💙

Trauma & PTSD

NADA's non-verbal, deeply calming nature makes it well-suited to trauma work. It has been used with veterans, survivors of abuse, and in post-disaster settings where talking therapies may not yet be accessible or appropriate.

🌸

Menopause Symptoms

One of the strongest evidence areas outside addiction. A 15-year programme at a UK hospital reported significant reductions in hot flushes and night sweats in breast cancer survivors who could not take hormonal therapy. Find out more on our menopause acupuncture page.

🚬

Smoking Cessation & Pain

NADA was originally developed for pain relief and opiate withdrawal. It remains widely used for smoking cessation support and as part of chronic pain management alongside other treatments. Anthony also delivers battlefield acupuncture for pain at the clinic.

  • "My acupuncture experience with Anthony has been excellent. I've had 4 sessions for headaches and arm pain. My arm pain released after the first session and my headaches have completely lifted after the 3rd session. I feel like something has lifted and I feel so much more like me again." — Amanda Walker, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Oct 2025

Is NADA Acupuncture Right for Me?

NADA isn't the right fit for everyone, and part of what we value at our Middlesbrough clinic is being upfront about that.

NADA tends to work well if you are:

  • Dealing with stress, anxiety, or burnout that isn't shifting with other approaches
  • Struggling with sleep disrupted by stress, overthinking, or nervous system dysregulation
  • Supporting addiction recovery alongside counselling or a structured programme
  • Managing menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats, particularly if HRT isn't suitable
  • Processing trauma or grief and looking for a non-verbal, body-based form of support
  • Someone who finds talking therapies difficult or wants something complementary to run alongside them

NADA may not be your first choice if you're looking for treatment targeting a specific physical injury or musculoskeletal condition. For those presentations, a personalised full-body acupuncture session or battlefield acupuncture for pain is likely to be more targeted and effective.

If you're not sure which treatment suits you best, just get in touch and we'll help you find the right starting point.

What Does the Research Actually Show?

NADA has an interesting and reasonably substantial evidence base. It's worth being straightforward about both what it shows and where the limits are.

For stress, anxiety, and general wellbeing

This is where the evidence is most consistent. Across multiple clinical settings, NADA is associated with significant reductions in anxiety, irritability, sleep problems, and cravings.

A clinical trial of NADA alongside a 28-day residential addiction programme found significant reductions in cravings, depression, anxiety, anger, and physical symptoms in the NADA group. The control group receiving standard treatment alone showed no significant change in these measures across the same period.

Published in Medical Acupuncture. doi.org/10.1089/acu.2010.0784

A randomised controlled trial by Carter and colleagues testing NADA alongside standard addiction treatment found that adding NADA was associated with better quality-of-life scores, improved energy and self-esteem, higher likelihood of employment at discharge, and reduced alcohol use at both three and six-month follow-up compared to controls receiving standard treatment alone.

Carter et al. Behavioural Sciences. doi.org/10.3390/bs7020037

For menopause and hot flushes

This is one of the most compelling areas of the NADA evidence base, particularly for women who cannot or choose not to take hormonal therapy.

A 15-year real-world evaluation of NADA for hot flushes and night sweats in breast cancer survivors found that 92 percent of women completed all eight treatments. Mean reductions in hot flush and night sweat frequency were 36 to 48 percent at end of treatment, with benefits largely maintained several weeks later. Only two adverse events were recorded across all 2,285 treatments.

de Valois et al. Supportive Care in Cancer. doi.org/10.1007/s00520-022-06898-7

Where evidence is more mixed

Not every trial shows NADA outperforming a control condition. A large RCT comparing NADA, a modified local auricular protocol, and a relaxation control in a substance use setting found no significant differences between the three groups at follow-up. All three showed some improvement, which tells us something useful: NADA may work partly through mechanisms shared with other low-intensity supportive interventions, including the simple act of sitting quietly and being cared for.

A large randomised trial found no significant difference between NADA, a modified auricular protocol, and a relaxation control for anxiety, sleep, or substance use at follow-up, with all three groups showing improvement. The authors note that NADA's real-world effectiveness may be better evaluated at programme level, looking at engagement, retention, and global symptom relief alongside standard care.

Stuyt et al., review published in Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation. doi.org/10.2147/SAR.S99161

What this means in plain terms

NADA is well-supported as an adjunct: something that works alongside other treatment, not instead of it. It consistently reduces anxiety, stress, cravings, and sleep difficulties. It has strong real-world evidence for menopausal symptoms. The evidence for long-term addiction outcomes as a standalone treatment is less definitive.

At our clinic, we're clear about this with every patient. NADA is a powerful tool for nervous system regulation and symptom relief. It's not a cure for addiction, trauma, or complex mental health conditions. It works best as part of a wider support plan. When it's used that way, the results are often quietly remarkable.

What to Expect at a NADA Session in Middlesbrough

Anthony delivering NADA treatment at our Middlesbrough clinic. Clients sit or recline comfortably throughout

A NADA session at our Middlesbrough clinic is calm, unhurried, and requires very little from you. You'll be welcomed by Anthony and have a brief conversation about what brought you in and what you're hoping to get from the treatment. You'll then sit comfortably while Anthony cleanses the outer ear and places five very fine, sterile needles into the NADA points on each ear. Most people feel very little beyond a mild sensation as the needles are placed.

You then rest quietly for 30 to 45 minutes. There's nothing you need to do. No conversation required. Many people find their breathing slows within a few minutes. Some doze. Others describe a sense of the room becoming very still. When the time is up, Anthony removes the needles gently and checks in with how you're feeling.

We offer private NADA sessions, and also sessions for two, so you can bring a partner, friend, or family member if you'd find that comforting. This is particularly popular for couples supporting each other through recovery, stress, or illness.

Appointments start from £45. You can find full details on our NADA treatment page.

How Many NADA Sessions Will I Need?

This varies depending on why you're coming and how your body responds. Most people notice something within the first two or three sessions: a quieter nervous system, better sleep, less reactivity to stress. A course of six to eight sessions is typical for stress, anxiety, or menopausal symptoms.

For more complex presentations, including addiction recovery, long-standing PTSD, or chronic pain, a longer course is usually more appropriate. NADA works best when it's running alongside other therapies rather than in isolation.

We'll always have an honest conversation with you about what's realistic for your situation. If NADA isn't the right fit, we'll say so and suggest what might serve you better.

NADA and Ear Seeds: Extending the Treatment

For some patients, we'll apply ear seeds to the NADA points at the end of a session. These small pellets continue to gently stimulate the same points over the following three to five days, extending the calming effect between appointments.

If you press the seeds gently a few times a day, particularly paired with a slow intentional breath, you're actively reinforcing the nervous system regulation that the session began. It's a simple practice that many patients find helpful for managing anxiety and sleep between visits.

  • Ear seeds are applied at no extra cost when clinically appropriate
  • Your practitioner will show you exactly how to use them before you leave

Final Thoughts

NADA acupuncture is one of those treatments that's hard to fully describe until you've experienced it. The five points are simple. The process is quiet. But what happens in that 30 to 45 minutes of stillness, the gradual unwinding of a nervous system that's been braced for too long, is something many patients describe as unlike anything else they've tried.

It's not a cure. It works best alongside other support. But as a way of helping the body access a different state: calmer, less reactive, more able to rest and recover. It's a tool we're proud to offer in Middlesbrough.
