You're not alone in this

I Know Exactly How You're Feeling Right Now.

You've just been told your baby is breech. And suddenly, the birth you'd pictured feels uncertain. You're reading about ECV, wondering what it means for your birth plan — and quietly hoping there's a gentler way.

There is.

Moxibustion is a gentle, non-invasive technique rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine that has helped many mothers across Teesside encourage their baby into the optimal position for birth. It involves no needles, no procedures, and no medical intervention. It's just one of the ways Deanna supports women through pregnancy acupuncture in Middlesbrough — from the first trimester right through to birth preparation.

It's also acknowledged by NHS maternity units across the UK, and recommended by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) as a complementary option worth exploring before considering ECV.

NHS acknowledgement: Multiple NHS Trusts — including Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust — offer or actively recommend moxibustion as part of their breech baby pathway. The RCOG suggests moxibustion as a complementary option before ECV. Published evidence supports its effectiveness in reducing breech presentation at birth.

✦ A note from Deanna

During my first pregnancy, my baby was breech. I didn't know about moxibustion at the time, so I went ahead with an External Cephalic Version — and it was deeply uncomfortable.

I'm now a licensed acupuncturist with specialist postgraduate training in maternity and obstetrics. And every time a mum arrives at my Middlesbrough clinic with a breech baby, I think about that experience — and how much I wish someone had told me sooner.

Moxibustion is what I would choose today. And it's what I offer to you.

Ancient Wisdom. Modern Evidence.

What Is Moxibustion — and Does It Actually Work?

Moxibustion uses the gentle warmth of a burning herb called mugwort (Ai Ye) to stimulate a specific acupuncture point on the little toe — known as BL67 — thought to encourage fetal movement and support your baby's natural turning reflex. It's painless, deeply relaxing, and has been used for over 2,000 years.

Most women describe the sensation as pleasantly warm — nothing more. Many notice their baby beginning to wriggle during or shortly after the session. There are no reported side effects for mother or baby when performed by a qualified practitioner.

Timing matters

When Is the Best Time to Start?

The optimal window for moxibustion is between 32 and 38 weeks of pregnancy, with 34 weeks being the sweet spot — your baby is big enough to settle head-down, but there's still room to turn.

If you're reading this at 35, 36, or even 37 weeks, it's still very much worth exploring. Babies have been known to turn as late as 38 to 39 weeks with moxibustion support.

📋 Already referred for ECV?

Using moxibustion before your ECV appointment can help. Many maternity practitioners report that babies are more responsive to ECV when moxibustion has already been used in the days before. Starting as soon as possible gives you the best chance.

If you're in Middlesbrough, Stockton, Darlington, Yarm, Thornaby, Hartlepool, or anywhere across Teesside, please get in touch and we'll find the earliest available appointment. Frequently Asked Questions About Moxibustion for Breech Babies

Is moxibustion safe for me and my baby?
Yes. Moxibustion is a gentle, non-invasive treatment with no reported side effects for mother or baby when performed by a qualified practitioner. It has been used safely for centuries and is acknowledged by NHS maternity units and the RCOG. Always let your midwife or consultant know before starting any complementary treatment.
What is the success rate of moxibustion for breech babies?
Clinical studies show significantly higher turning rates with moxibustion. A major Italian study found 75.4% of babies turned (versus 47.7% without treatment). A Chinese study found 81% turned (versus 49%). The 2012 Cochrane Review found moxibustion significantly reduced breech presentation at birth compared to no treatment. Results vary by individual — Deanna will always discuss your specific situation honestly.
Can moxibustion work at 36 or 37 weeks?
Yes, though earlier is better. The optimal window is around 34 weeks, but treatment can be beneficial up to 38 weeks. If you're at 36 or 37 weeks, it's still worth exploring — contact Deanna to discuss your individual situation.
How many sessions will I need?
Most women have one clinic session with Deanna, followed by daily home treatment for 7 to 10 days (15 to 20 minutes per session, once or twice daily). Smokeless moxa kits are available to purchase at the clinic or online store for home use. Some women return for a second clinic check. Your individual plan will be discussed at your consultation.
Can I do moxibustion at home myself?
Yes — and daily home treatment is an important part of the protocol. Deanna will teach you exactly how during your session. Smokeless moxa kits are available to purchase at the clinic or from our online store, with full written safety instructions included. You're very welcome to bring your partner so they can assist with home treatment too.
Do I need to tell my midwife?
Yes, always. Moxibustion works alongside — not instead of — your NHS maternity care. Your midwife will continue to monitor your baby's position and advise on next steps. Many midwives are very familiar with moxibustion and are actively supportive of it.
Does moxibustion involve needles?
No. Moxibustion uses only warmth — a moxa stick is held near the BL67 point on your little toe. There are absolutely no needles involved. If you'd like acupuncture alongside your moxibustion session, this is something you can discuss with Deanna.
Does the smoke bother people?
Our smokeless moxa kits — available to purchase at the clinic or online — are safe, clean, and comfortable to use indoors. The clinic sessions are also held in a well-ventilated environment.
