You don't have to be an elite athlete to benefit from sports massage. Most of the people who come to us at our Middlesbrough clinic are active individuals: people who run, train, sit at a desk all day, carry stress in their shoulders, or simply want their body to feel better than it currently does.

Sports massage works on the deeper layers of muscle tissue, targeting adhesions, tension, and restriction that build up over time. Delivered by Anthony, a Level 3 VTCT-qualified sports massage therapist, each session starts with a proper assessment and ends with you knowing exactly what's going on in your body and what to do about it.

If you're in Middlesbrough, Teesside, or the surrounding area and you're tired of managing the same aches month after month, this is where that changes.

Who Sports Massage Is For

Sports massage isn't just for runners or gym-goers. It's for anyone whose body is holding tension it can't shift on its own.

🏃

Runners & Gym-Goers

Training puts consistent demand on muscles, fascia, and joints. Regular sports massage supports faster recovery, reduces injury risk, and keeps you performing at your best.

💼

Office Workers & Desk-Sitters

Chronic tension in the neck, shoulders, and lower back is one of the most common things we see. Sports massage targets those holding patterns and gives your body a genuine reset.

Sports Players & Athletes

From Sunday league to competitive sport, regular massage helps manage the wear and tear that comes with physical activity, keeping you on the pitch, not in the physio chair.

🌿

Anyone Carrying Ongoing Tension

Muscles hold stress, fatigue, and anxiety long after the event has passed. Sports massage works at the tissue level, helping the body and nervous system genuinely let go.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

1

Your Assessment

For first visits, Anthony begins with a focused consultation: your health history, current concerns, where you're feeling restriction or pain, and what you want to achieve. This shapes everything that follows. Nothing is guesswork.

2

Your Treatment

Sports massage uses a combination of techniques: effleurage, petrissage, deep tissue work, trigger point release, and stretching, chosen specifically for your needs. You'll stay appropriately covered throughout. Pressure is calibrated to your body, not a default setting.

3

Aftercare & Next Steps

After your session you'll get practical aftercare guidance: hydration, movement, stretches, and honest advice about how often you'd benefit from treatment, based on your goals. No scripts, no sales pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be sporty or athletic to have a sports massage?

Not at all. Despite the name, sports massage is just as beneficial for people who work at a desk, carry stress in their body, or deal with ongoing muscular tension from everyday life. The techniques are more targeted and thorough than a general relaxation massage, which is why they work well for a broad range of clients at our Middlesbrough clinic.

Is sports massage painful?

There can be some discomfort when working through areas of tightness or adhesion, sometimes described as a "good pain", but pressure is always calibrated to what your body can comfortably accept. You should never feel the need to grit your teeth. Communication throughout is encouraged.

How often should I have a sports massage?

It depends on your goals. For general maintenance and stress management, once a month is a reasonable baseline. If you're in training, recovering from an injury, or dealing with persistent tension, fortnightly or weekly sessions are often more effective. Anthony will give you an honest recommendation based on your assessment, not a generic schedule.

What's the difference between sports massage and deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage is one of the techniques used within sports massage: it refers to working into the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Sports massage is broader: it includes assessment, a range of techniques tailored to your condition, and is specifically designed to address the causes of muscular restriction rather than just providing temporary relief.

Do you offer pregnancy massage in Middlesbrough?

We offer specialist pregnancy acupuncture and maternity care at the clinic, which supports many of the same goals as pregnancy massage, including pain relief, relaxation, and preparation for birth. If you're looking for pregnancy massage in Middlesbrough, get in touch and we'll help you find the right option.

Where is your sports massage clinic in Middlesbrough?

We're based at The House, 283 Acklam Road, Middlesbrough, TS5 7BP, located inside Acklam Shopping Parade next to Erimus Dry Cleaners and Morgans Bakery. The building was formerly the Acklam Medical Centre. Free parking is available at Acklam Shopping Parade, with additional street parking on the surrounding roads. Easily accessible from across Teesside including Stockton-on-Tees, Thornaby, Yarm, and Darlington.

Can I combine sports massage with acupuncture?

Yes. It's one of the most effective combinations we offer. The Sports Massage + Ear Acupuncture session (90 minutes, £55) brings together targeted physical work with the nervous system regulation that ear acupuncture provides. It's particularly popular with clients who are carrying both physical tightness and emotional stress or burnout.

What to Wear & What to Bring

A few practical things that will help you get the most from your session.

👕

What to Wear

Loose, comfortable clothing works best. For back, shoulder, and neck work you'll be asked to remove your top and will be covered with towels throughout. Only the area being treated is uncovered. For leg and lower body work, shorts are ideal. If you forget, we have towels and can work around most clothing.

🎒

What to Bring

Just yourself. If you've had a recent injury, scan, or physio assessment it's helpful to bring any relevant letters or reports, though this is not essential. Drink water beforehand if you can, and avoid a heavy meal in the hour before your session. That's it.

💧

After Your Session

You may feel some tenderness in the areas worked on for 24 to 48 hours afterwards, particularly after a first session or deeper work. This is normal and usually settles quickly. Drink plenty of water, avoid intense exercise that day, and let the tissue rest. Anthony will go through aftercare with you at the end of your appointment.
