General Acupuncture Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?
This is one of the most common worries, and completely understandable. Acupuncture needles are very fine, solid, and flexible,  nothing like injection needles.
Most people feel very little when they’re inserted.
You might notice a dull ache, warmth, heaviness, tingling, or a gentle spreading sensation. This is called De Qi, the body responding and energy beginning to move. It’s usually brief and often described as grounding or deeply relaxing.
If you’re nervous, we go slowly. You’re always in control.
What actually happens during an acupuncture session?
Your first appointment includes:
  • A thorough consultation (health history, symptoms, goals)
  • Gentle observation (tongue, pulse, overall presentation)
  • A tailored treatment plan
  • Time to rest quietly with needles in place
Many people feel calm, sleepy, or deeply relaxed afterwards.
Some notice subtle changes straight away; others feel shifts unfold over the days following treatment.
What should I wear?
Comfort is key.
Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal.
We often access points on the arms, legs, abdomen, back, or ears,  you’ll always be covered appropriately and treated with dignity and care.
How do I prepare for my appointment?

To get the most from your session:
  • Eat a light meal beforehand (don’t come on an empty stomach)
  • Avoid alcohol beforehand if possible
  • Stay hydrated
  • Arrive a few minutes early to settle
There’s nothing special you need to bring, just yourself.
How many sessions will I need?
This is an important question, and one we answer honestly.
Acupuncture works best through consistency, not one-off treatments.

The British Acupuncture Council’s evidence base often references 6–10 sessions as the point where meaningful, measurable change occurs for many conditions.
Your body needs time to:
  • Regulate the nervous system
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Improve circulation and hormone signalling
  • Create sustainable, lasting change
One session may bring temporary relief,  but real transformation happens over time. For this reason, we may not be the right fit if you’re only looking for a single “quick fix.”
Will acupuncture work for me?
No ethical practitioner can promise results, but we can promise a thoughtful, evidence-informed, individualised approach.
Acupuncture supports your body’s own healing mechanisms.

How quickly you respond depends on:
  • The nature and duration of your condition
  • Stress levels and lifestyle factors
  • Consistency with treatment
Our role is to guide, support, and adjust your care as your body responds.
Is acupuncture safe alongside medication or IVF?

Yes,  and it’s commonly used alongside conventional medical care, including fertility treatments and IVF.
We work supportively, not in opposition, and will always take your full medical history into account.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance or healthcare plans in Middlesbrough?

Some health care plans may cover acupuncture.
We can provide a receipt for your treatment, which you can submit directly to your provider. Please note that payment is made to us at the time of booking, and any reimbursement is claimed by you from your insurer. Coverage varies depending on your individual plan, so we recommend checking directly with your provider.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with acupuncture?

Acupuncture is considered very safe when performed by a trained qualified professional.
Occasionally, people may experience:
  • Mild bruising
  • Temporary soreness
  • Fatigue or emotional release
These effects are usually short-lived and part of the body’s natural response to treatment. Your full health history is reviewed before treatment to ensure acupuncture is appropriate for you.
What happens after I book my appointment?
After booking, you’ll be asked to complete your consultation forms online via Fresha.
This allows us to fully understand your health history and tailor your treatment in advance. Most paperwork is completed online, although occasionally an additional form may be signed in clinic if needed. Completing your forms before arrival helps your appointment run smoothly and allows you to get the most from your session.
What should I do before my first acupuncture appointment?
To support your treatment:
  • Eat a light meal beforehand
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid alcohol before your session
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
Try to arrive with a little extra time, especially if parking is busy, so you can settle and relax before treatment.
Where do you put the acupuncture needles?

Needles are placed based on your individual symptoms and treatment goals.
They may be inserted on the arms, legs, abdomen, back, or ears,  not necessarily where your symptoms are felt. Each point is chosen carefully to support balance and healing throughout the body.
How much does acupuncture cost?

We believe in being clear and upfront about costs, so you can make an informed decision without surprises.
Our fees are:
  • £80 – New Patient Consultation & Treatment - This includes a full consultation, health history, and your first acupuncture treatment.
  • £65 – Follow-Up Acupuncture Session Ongoing treatments tailored to your progress and needs.
  • £220 – Pre-booked Block of 4 Sessions. Designed for those ready to commit to consistency and get the best results from their care.
Acupuncture works best as a course of treatment rather than a one-off session. Pre-booking allows us to support your body through change over time and offers better value for ongoing care.
Payment is taken at the time of booking.
